Lap Desk – Favorite Productivity Tool

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing and Productivity Expert
July 27th, 2017

lap_desk_hobby_lobby

One of my very favorite productivity tools is a lap desk, but not just any lap desk, a lap desk with a cup holder and a penholder. It is a multifunctional accessory that provides increased productivity while keeping you and your computer healthier!

The cup holder can hold a variety of items from a drink to paper clips. The penholder, when it has a raised rim, keeps you computer from sliding towards you if the lap desk is angled on your lap.

First let’s talk about “health” benefits. If your computer is sitting on your bed or on your lap, the computer fan will pull in lint from your bedding and your jeans. This lint or dust disperses throughout the inside of you computer creating havoc on your computer, leading to hardware failure.

Now let’s talk about your health! When a computer is on a desk, not your lap, your arms are raised to desk height. This non-natural position puts your wrists and arms at risk for strain problems. Plus you can’t type as fast with your arms raised, hence making you less productive. Ideally you want your computer on your lap, on a lap desk.

The location of where you sit in a room also plays a factor in the health of your eyes as well as with your productivity. With a lap desk you can choose where to sit. You’ll want to choose a spot that meets certain criteria. Choose a location that allows you to easily gaze further away, like out a window or a doorway. If you don’t, your eyes will be limited to focusing on close up objects, creating eyestrain. Gazing in the distance reduces eyestrain.

Having the opportunity to gaze further away will also increase your productivity. First, it enables you to think creatively and problem solve. By looking off into the distance, you can let your mind drift and think. Here’s a perfect example of how NOT to think creatively or problem solve. Take an 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper. Place the paper 12 inches in front of your face. Now try to think creatively. Take the paper away, look out the window, and now try to think creatively. You should see the difference.

The ideal location to sit should also have a solid wall or walls behind you. You don’t want doorways, openings, or windows behind you. All “openings” should be in your peripheral
vision. This will provide a sense of ease that someone isn’t watching over you or coming into the room unexpectedly.

Additionally, a lap desk is great to pull out when you’re a passenger in a car or parked when you’re the driver. It’s an ideal place to spread out lunch or dinner on the go; when doing work on your computer; or when in need of a flat work surface.

Last but not least, a lap desk with a cup holder also comes in handy when painting your nails. The flat surface is great for painting and the cup holder is ideal to place the polish in.

I must admit I have three of the same lap desks, just in different colors. I keep one at home, one at my office, and one in my car. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby with a 40% of coupon (coupon link is on Hobby Lobby home page).

Happy lap-desk-using!

Amazing Organizers from the NAPO Conference

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing and Productivity Expert
May 1st, 2013

I recently arrived home from the National Association of Professional Organizers Conference and Expo

in New Orleans. As usual, the conference and expo proved to be a much worthwhile trip. Just when you thought organizing products couldn’t get any better, they did. Manufactures pulled out all the stops when it came to bells and whistles or reinventing the wheel. I was like a kid in a candy store.

While I can’t share with you all the amazing products I had the privilege of

viewing here are just a few of my favorites.

All Access™ Containers by Rubbermaid
Naturally we stack containers and totes to maximize our vertical storage space but what happens when what we need is in the bottom container?

Rubbermaid reinvented the storage container to give “all access” to all the contents in the stack. The clear side on the container allows you to see what is inside and its drop down feature provides instant access to what is inside. No more moving totes around ever again. The All Access™ organizers are available in Target, Home Depot, and Wal-mart

Pliio™ Clothing Files
Pliio™ is the new filing

systems for t-shirts, tops, and scarves. A thin Pliio™ folding board allows you to fold almost anything in s

econds. With this system store your t-shirts in a drawer or upright on a shelf vertically. You’ll save space and time. Read more…

1″ Stales Better® Finder with Removable FileRings™

Using a 3 ring binder for a project? When the project is complete how do you file all those papers? With Staples Better® Binder with Removable FileRings™ you can remove the outside cover and file just the binding with documents attached. Pretty neat idea!

What’s That Paint – Paint Can Labels

Think outside the can! Keep all your paint organized by knowing the details of the paint. These paint can labels provide you with the pertinent questions to keeping your paint organized.

Home Office Products by Esselte® including Ampad® & Pendaflex®

Double Seal Envelopes by Ampad®/Esselte®
The days of searching for that piece of tape to double seal you envelopes are finally over. The new Ampad® DoubleSeal™ envelopes actually come with a built-in piece of tape for the ultimate in convenience.

Privacy CopySafe® File Jacket by Pendaflex®/Esselte®
Enjoy the convenience of using clear transparent file jackets? You no longer have to worry about sensitive documents being seen by curious eyes when using the Privacy CopySafe® File Jackets. These file jackets have a special printed design ensuring privacy of contents.

EZ Flag Writing Pads by Ampad®/Esselte®
This writing pad is like no other. With the EZ Flag Writing Pad you’ll never need a highlighter again. It includes 25 repositionable see through note strips and 25 repositionable stick on flags for labeling and highlighting. Sheets are perforated for easy removal.

Happy organizing!

How to Share Files Over Multiple Computers for Free

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing and Productivity Expert
January 22nd, 2013

Let’s go into dreamland for a minute. You’re busy working on your computer and realize the document you need is on the computer upstairs but that computer is already shutdown. You wave a magic wand and the document appears on your computer. A few days later you are out of town and discover that you need the itinerary that is on your computer at home but all you have with you is your smart phone. You wave a magic wand again; the document appears on your smart phone.

Well you don’t have to be in dreamland anymore. Share your documents and photos with all your computers and smart phones for free. No more e-mailing yourself documents and photos just to have them on another device. You can even share a single designated folder of photos and videos with grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends.

Dropbox is free for up to 2 GB of storage. Dropbox has provided a special link to to encourage existing account holders like myself to spread the news of DropboxBy using this link we each will benefit, you’ll get a little extra storage and so will I.

Downloading an app for your mobile device is also free.  Whether you have an iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, or Kindle Fire you can have access to your documents, photos, and videos on the go.

If your computer is temporarily out of service, no worries. With Dropbox you can hop on another computer and have access to all your documents, photos, and videos.

Dropbox has simplified my technology life more than I could have ever imagined! I truly can’t say enough about it. I could tell story after story of how much time and stress it has saved me. I hope you find Dropbox as useful as I do.

Happy Dropboxing!

Luggage to Love

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing and Productivity Expert
June 23rd, 2010

If you are in need of purchasing new luggage, I highly recommend buying luggage with 4 wheels on the bottom instead of 2. The 4 wheels allow you to steer and maneuver your luggage in any direction seamlessly. If you are going down a crowded aisle your can turn luggage the narrow way to easily squeeze by. Matter of fact, just spin your luggage around and you can easily fit down a narrow bus or airplane aisle.

With 4 wheels on your luggage you don’t have to tilt your suitcase down and bear the weight of the suitcase as you pull it along. With 4 wheels you can keep the luggage standing upright and just push it along. Pushing is easier because you have your weight behind the push.

The only downside to having 4 wheels on your luggage is that it can easily roll. It rolls so easily that driveways with a slope can be problem. You wouldn’t want to set your luggage at the top of the driveway, especially if you live in San Francisco. Perhaps one day they will add a brake lever to 2 of the 4 wheels, similar to a baby stroller.

Once you own luggage with 4 wheels I don’t know if you can ever go back. I have the Samsonite Spinner and love it. I know that if I was challenged to an obstacle course with my Samsonite Spinner I could surpass anyone with a piece of luggage with 2 wheels.

Happy luggage maneuvering!

Christmas Decorating Made Easy

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing and Productivity Expert
December 7th, 2009

The trick to easy holiday decorating is having Command™ Hooks on hand. 3M’s Command™ line allows you to put hooks where you never thought possible since you don’t have to worry about being left with a nail hole afterward.

These hooks can be put on smooth and semi-smooth surfaces such as walls with paint or wallpaper; glass, windows, mirrors, wood, and metal. The small clear hooks are ideal for hanging strings of Christmas lights on fireplace mantles, mirrors, windows and doors. The large hooks are ideal for hanging Christmas wreaths or other decorations on windows, walls, and doors. The possibilities with these hooks are endless since there is no surface damage left behind.

Each Command™ hook comes with a double sided adhesive strip. You place the strip on the hook, then remove the adhesive backing from the other side, press the hook firmly against the surface. Then clip your string lights under the small clear Command™ hooks or hang your wreath on a larger hook.

Removing the hook is just as easy. To remove, pull straight down on the adhesive strip. As you pull down drag your knuckles along the wall or surface to insure that you are pulling straight down. As you pull down the strip stretches and the adhesive releases. It really couldn’t be any easier. It just takes seconds to attach or remove Command™ hooks.

Add Command™ hooks to your shopping list to make decorating and organizing a breeze. 3M often offers a coupon for Command™ at commandcoupon.com. Be sure to check their website.

You can find Command™ products at a variety of stores such as grocery, hardware, craft, and office.

I wish you quick and simple Christmas decorating!
