Free Extended Warranty

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing Expert and Speaker
January 22nd, 2009

How many times has an item stopped working right after the manufacturer’s warranty expired? But if you purchased the item on a credit card that has a free extended warranty program, you can either get the item repaired at the warranty company’s expense or receive a check for the original purchase price if the item is not repairable or if it is not worth the cost of repair.

I highly recommend taking a moment now to turn your credit card over and call the toll-free customer service number on the back of your card. Ask the customer service representative if your credit card company provides an extended warranty program.

Do keep in mind that in order to have an item covered under an extended warranty program, you’ll need to have your original sales receipt (photocopy it in case it fades) and the warranty coverage in writing (if you no longer have the warranty book, you may be able to get a copy of the warranty from the manufacturer or online).

Call your credit card company today. Let me know your results.

A Mouse Can Make A Difference

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing Expert and Speaker
January 22nd, 2009

A laser wireless mouse (as opposed to a non-laser mouse) is quicker, smoother, and oh so much better than a regular mouse. The laser mouse glides right along with such precision. I feel in love with Microsoft’s wireless laser mouse two years ago. I was so thrilled with the difference that this mouse made, I bought this type of mouse for every computer I had at home and work.

Then, a few months ago I ordered a new laptop and much to my surprise feel in love with yet a faster mouse. This mouse is wired, something I am normally opposed to. But, my Toshiba wired laser mouse is really the ultimate for me. It moves faster than any other mouse I have used and oh it glides so smoothly. It is a tiny little mouse so it is very lightweight. I was apprehensive about purchasing a small mouse, but now I wouldn’t purchase anything but a small mouse. The larger mice now seem clunky and hard to move.

If you are at all like me and have a passion for saving time, consider switching your mouse and donating your old one to a school or charity. I truly believe I save time when using my small laser mouse. In most cases I think the smaller the better, but I’ll let you be the judge!

Inundated with Cords, Cables, and Chargers?

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing Expert and Speaker
January 11th, 2009

This is the time of year when you may find yourself inundated with cords, cables, and chargers. Don’t worry there are simple solutions to get them under control.

First take care of the cables and cords that are being used by putting a label or tag on each cord designating what it goes to, i.e. Monitor, TV, or CPU. This way when you are bending over trying to wiggle between furniture you can locate the correct cord. It is usually best to label the cord near the end that has the electrical plug. Even though it might seem easier to place the label on the outlet, don’t. You never know when you’ll move the cord to another location. The good news is that once you label the cord, it is labeled for life. I prefer using a label maker to create the label. If you don’t have a label maker, write on masking tape or a printer label with a Sharpie™.

For all those extra cables, cords, and chargers that aren’t in use, be sure to label them also or you’ll never remember what they are for. Corral the cords and cables with a rubber band, twisty tie, Cord Clamp™, or Ziploc™ bag then toss them into a box or bin designated as the Electronic Box. I prefer a box or container with a lid to keep the dust out. The Electronic Box will reduce clutter around your house or office and save you time and stress when you are in need of a cord. For multiple cords of the same type, i.e. extension cords or telephone cables, you may want to put them in a Ziploc Bag™. Be sure to label the bag with a Sharpie™.

Decrease Your Clutter

By Diane Albright CPO, Organizing Expert and Speaker
January 7th, 2009

January is designated as “Get Organized” month by the National Association of Professional Organizers. This means the “organizing bug” may have recently bitten you.
Today on Channel 69 WFMZ’s Sunrise Show, I was thrilled to show viewers how to start off the year right by decreasing their clutter. If you are trying to get rid of clutter in your home, start by establishing five bins or baskets. I recommend they have lids so they can be stacked to maximize your space and to keep dust off of the items. I am providing you the labels for each category - click to print. Please note there are two labels for each category, one for the front and one for the back of the box or bin. By using one on each side, you won’t have to think which side to face out.

Electronics – corral all your loose cables, cords, charges, and telephones. Label each cable or cord and wrap a rubber around it or if you prefer, place it in a Ziploc™ bag and label the bag. Do the same for cellular phone charges. Toss in extra phones. Every time you need a cord, cable, charger or phone, you’ll know where to “shop” for one or better yet, you’ll know where to toss one.

Give Away – keep an ongoing give away box or bin to toss in things you don’t want, don’t where or don’t like. This will eliminate clutter from collecting and closets from bulging. You’ll never have to have a major purging day again. When the box is full giveaway the items to family, friends or a charity.

Spare Parts & Unknown Pieces – not sure what to do with the extra belt that comes with a vacuum cleaner or the vinyl repair kit that comes with inflatable items? Toss them into this box. Have you ever found a part of piece that you are not sure what it goes to, but are hesitant to throw it out? This category allows for a safe keeping of unknown parts until you can determine if they are needed.

Sock with Missing Mates – hopefully a small shoe-size box will due for socks with missing mates. Keep this box near your dryer.

Returns – select a decorative basket or fabric box with lid and place near the door you typically exit. The basket will act as a temporary holding bin for purchases you need to return to stores, movie rentals, library books, or other borrowed items. On the way out the door, take a peek to see if you will be passing by any of the locations of where items need to be returned.

Go ahead now, print out the labels and get started. Let us know of your results!
